Texas coronavirus cases account for almost 14% of new cases in the United States

With the daily number of new coronavirus infections in Texas now exceeding that of most other states, experts say Texas has become a hotspot for the global pandemic and more aggressive measures are needed to slow the spread of the virus. .

New confirmed coronavirus cases in Texas now account for about 14% of the US total measured by a seven-day average, a significantly higher proportion than its 9% share of the country’s population. Since July 1, the United States has reported 358,027 new infections. Of these, 50,599 were in Texas.

On Tuesday, the Texas Department of State Health Services reported more than 10,000 new cases representing nearly 20% of the nation’s new cases for the day. This could be a catch-up holiday of July 4, said DSHS spokesman Chris Van Deusen, noting that the figures reported Sunday and Monday were lower.

There has never been a higher risk of contracting COVID-19 in Texas, the U.S. public health agency wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

New York and Florida are the only other states to have exceeded 10,000 cases per day since the start of the pandemic, although the number of cases in New York has declined sharply since its April peak now counting on average less than 700 new cases per day in July.

We are going to be in a situation where we have to seriously consider taking shelter again, said Dennis Perrotta, a former Texas state epidemiologist. What we have is a large amount of virus now circulating in many areas, and simply wear masks when you’re not about to cut it.

The number of Texans tested for the virus increased steadily in June, but the expansion of tests alone cannot explain the growth of new cases, said Dr. David Lakey, Vice Chancellor of Health Affairs and Chief Physician from the University of Texas System. .

If we only tested more, we wouldn’t see that number of hospitalizations and ICU admissions, said Catherine Troisi, infectious disease epidemiologist at the University of Texas School of Public Health. On Wednesday, 9,610 people were hospitalized at COVID-19 in Texas.

An explosion of hospitalizations has put severe strain on state hospitals, particularly in the Rio Grande Valley.

The United States reported more than 3 million coronavirus infections since the beginning of the pandemic, including more than 210,000 in Texas. However, the extent of the virus’s spread is unclear. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated at the end of June that more than 20 million people had contracted the virus nationwide, a figure about 10 times higher than the number of laboratory-confirmed cases at the time.

Public health researchers have indicated that there are various measures of concern in Texas’ efforts to contain the virus. First, the percentage of viral tests positive return between 10% and 15% since late June. The previous month, the Governor Greg Abbott said a rate above 10% would be an alarm signal.

It’s one of the many benchmarks the state has surpassed since Abbott presented a plan in May that has allowed companies to gradually reopen in Texas. The governor said he is monitoring the number of hospitalizations, the rate of positive viral test results and the seven-day average of new confirmed COVID-19 infections to guide Texas’ reopening efforts.

The White House and the CDC released guidelines for reopening states that included a 14-day downward trajectory of new virus cases or a 14-day decrease in the percentage of positive tests.

Instead, the number of new daily infections in Texas has increased steadily, averaging 7,228 days of July 7.

On June 22, Abbott said that if the three measures that he was watching were to double within a month, it would put Texas in an emergency situation where stronger measures are needed. On June 25, he reinstated the ban on elective surgeries in four metropolitan counties, then extended it to four counties in South Texas five days later to preserve hospital capacity. On June 26, he ordered the bars closed and capped restaurant capacity at 50%, compared to 75%. And last Thursday, as the number of cases continued to climb, he issued a decree ordering Texans in most countries to wear masks in public.

By Tuesday, two weeks after Abbots’ words on June 22, the number of hospitalizations and the weekly average of new cases had doubled.

We started to reopen and we did not wait long enough to see what would happen with those first steps. This was completely predictable, said Troisi, adding that any further action, such as the order of the mask, will take at least two weeks to show its effects. If people really wear masks, it would go a long way, but I’m not sure it will happen.
