JCB could make fans when bosses promise to do "whatever they can" to help UK fight coronaviruses

The bosses of JCB, the giant of the diggers, have promised to do "everything they can" to help the country weather the coronavirus pandemic.

Manufacturers across the country, including Staffordshire-based JCB, will be invited by Prime Minister Boris Johnson to use production lines to build more fans.

JCB President Lord Anthony Bamford said the cabinet was approached by the Prime Minister.

A decision is being made as to whether the business can help or not.

Lord Bamford said: "We have been approached by the Prime Minister to see if we can help with the production of fans.

"We currently have research and engineering teams who are actively studying demand.

"It is not yet clear if we can help, but as a British company, we will do everything we can to help during the unprecedented times our country is facing."

The news comes as the Derbyshire Rolls-Royce firm said today that it is currently waiting to find out what the government needs and how it might be able to help concretely.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the country is in dire need of ventilators.

He said: "We start with around 5,000 fans, we think we need a lot more than that and we say if you produce a fan, we will buy it. No number is too high .

"These are relatively complicated pieces of equipment. I couldn't make one, but they are not that complicated that the advanced manufacturing that this country is so good at now cannot put its production lines back.
