Voter ID Figures for Burnley Borough Elections

Data released by Burnley City Council shows the number of people who brought ID to polling places in local elections on 4 May.

Data shows that 99.5% of voters voting at borough polling places carried photo identification that meets the newly introduced voter identification requirements.

Figures counted across the borough show that 11,590 voters cast their ballots at 52 polling places.

At the end of polling day, 58 voters who attempted to vote at polling places did not receive ballots because they did not meet the new voter ID requirement of 0.5%. Considering postal voting, the total number of ballots issued drops to 0.3%.

The figure also shows that 172 voters were initially rejected, but 114 returned with acceptable ID and were able to vote. This means that 66.3% of those who were initially rejected returned and received their ballots.

A total of 19,361 ballots were issued (including mail-in ballots) and the overall turnout was 29.4%. The total number of voters is 65,862.

Returning Officer Mick Cartledge said: We supported the Board of Elections’ work to spread the message about the need to bring photo identification to the polls.
