DVIDS – News – US and UK Navies Respond to Merchant Ship’s Distress Call in the Strait of Hormuz

STRAIT OF HORMUZ United States and United Kingdom Royal Navy forces responded to a distress call from a merchant ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz on June 4 as attack boats fast Iranians were harassing the commercial vessel.

The internationally flagged merchant vessel made a radio distress call at 4:56 p.m. local time as it passed through the narrow strait. The civilian crew reported that three fast attack craft with armed personnel approached and followed the merchant vessel at close range. The fast attack craft was assessed as belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy.

The United States Navy guided-missile destroyer USS McFaul (DDG 74) and the British Royal Navy frigate HMS Lancaster (F 229) both received the distress call and Lancaster launched a helicopter to keep watch. The US 5th Fleet also directed a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft to survey the scene.

The situation calmed down about an hour later when the merchant vessel confirmed that the fast attack craft had left the scene. The merchant vessel continued to transit through the Strait of Hormuz without further incident.

The U.S. 5th Fleet remains vigilant and bolsters defense around the key strait with partners to bolster regional maritime security and stability.
