UK predicts hottest day in 2023

A heat wave could hit parts of the UK this week, but heavy rain and thunder are expected to follow.

The National Weather Service said temperatures are set to rise from Thursday through Saturday and could reach 29C, the hottest day of the year so far.

Temperatures in the southeast of England will be around 17C, and the nights will be humid.

Clouds, rain and thunderstorms are expected over the weekend.

Thresholds for heat waves vary across the UK, but some areas are classified as having three-day highs ranging from 25C to 28C.

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said:

There will still be plenty of sunlight around, but it will be much hotter at night.”

Partridge said there will be no major changes in the weather over the next few days. However, from Thursday, Storm Oscar, which now crosses the Canary Islands, will push the anticyclone further east, pushing the mercury up to 25C or 26C.

The highest temperatures occur in south-west England and south-west Wales.

It will be warm again from Friday, but the air will become wetter and there is a risk of showers across south-west England.

The warmest temperatures expected on Friday are likely in central and southern England, with 26C or 27C.

Saturday will be the warmest day and forecasters expect it to reach 27C or 28C, with 29C north of London unlikely.

However, there is a risk of thunder and showers from the southwest to the northeast over the weekend.

Mr Partridge said: We are continuing the showers on Sunday and Monday and it should be a bit cooler again.

Over the weekend, showers can be heavy at times and there is a risk of some thunder.

It will rain 10-15mm for 2-3 hours.

Theweatheris is expected to reach borderline standards for a heat wave, with south-west England most likely to see a heat wave, the Meteorological Office said.

Britain’s hottest temperature so far was 25.1C in Porthmadog in northwest Wales on May 30, but Mr Partridge said the UK will definitely see higher temperatures.

He also said the humidity at night would be uncomfortable as some areas would not drop below 15C or 16C compared to around 3C earlier in the week.
