Arizona family tries to return from Morocco
More than 5700 kilometers from their home in Phoenix, in a guest house in Marrakech, Morocco, Gabrielle Almeter and her parents are waiting to find out how they can get home.
Like many americans traveling abroadCountries around the world have suddenly closed the borders and airlines have canceled flights, they are caught in the fallout trying to stop the spread of the new coronavirus.
The family left Phoenix on March 9 to travel to Morocco with a brief stop in Europe, reports The republic of arizona, which is part of the USA TODAY network. After arriving in Londonto, a connection with Morocco, President Trump announced travel restrictions from the European Union's Schengen area. As American citizens connecting to London Morocco, the statement did not apply to them, so they continued their journey to Casablanca.
Then things changed quickly.
"As a family, we were just amazed at how quickly everything has changed in recent days," Almeter told The Arizona Republic.
First of all, their tour operator canceled their tour. Making the most of the situation, the family decided to continue traveling to Marrakech.
The Moroccan government then declared that it would close its borders and cancel international flights. This left the Almeters unsure if their return flight to the UK would depart. They were also informed that their flight from London to Phoenix had been canceled.
"We understand that the (Moroccan) government would like to suspend flights to Morocco to prevent the spread of the coronavirus; however, we do not understand why they will not let foreigners leave," Almeter wrote.
Will the State Department repatriate American citizens?
Almeter said she couldn't contact the U.S. Embassy in Morocco or EasyJet, the airline they were returning to Europe, to find out what would happen next.
"Countries like France and the Netherlands have been in touch with the Moroccan government to organize flights to repatriate their citizens, but the United States government has done nothing so far," wrote Almeter. .
They are not the only American family stuck in this situation. A spokesperson for US Senator Kirsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) Said that Sinema's office had heard from Arizonans around the world who were wondering how to get home.
The spokeswoman told the Republic that the Sinema office "communicated with the State Department to ensure that Arizonans can return home safely".
The State Department did not immediately respond to inquiries asking whether the United States government was considering repatriation flights.

Until a repatriation solution is found, Americans who need help getting home must do the following:
- Contact their senator or their representative to plead on their behalf.

For the Almeters, while flights on EasyJet continue to be canceled, they are nervously watching to see if theirs to the UK are nearby. It is scheduled for March 18.
