UK households urged to submit meter readings before energy price cuts | energy bills

Millions of households are being urged to submit their meter readings to their energy suppliers this weekend to avoid overpaying when cheaper prices come out on Monday.

Consumer advocate Martin Lewis is among those urging people to get out their phones, pens and notepads to take full advantage of the 12.3% cut in Ofgem's energy price cap, which changes quarterly.

According to comparison and conversion website Uswitch, the difference in weekly energy consumption between April and March is 4.65 for the average household.

The UK's energy price cap will be lowered from 238 won to 1,690 won for the period from April 1 to June 30, easing some of the pressure on household finances thanks to a mild winter and low gas prices. These figures are for a typical household that uses electricity and gas and pays by direct debit.

The average household on a standard variable tariff is expected to consume 127% of energy in April compared to 205 in March due to cheaper rates and lower usage as the weather warms, Uswitch said.

If a consumer does not submit meter readings, the supplier must calculate charges based on estimated usage. This means that some people may pay too much and others may not pay enough.

People on standard tariffs who do not have a working smart meter and do not submit current meter readings risk having some of their usage billed at the old, higher rate after April 1.

The number of households affected is estimated at 9.6 million.

Lewis, founder of the site MoneySavingExpert, said this was meter reading week. He urged those affected to provide up-to-date meter readings within a few days of the April 1 rate change to reduce the risk of their suppliers assuming they used more energy at higher rates than they currently do. It actually exists.

For added peace of mind, he advised emailing yourself a time-stamped photo of the meter.

Uswitch said 9.6 million affected households were at risk of overpaying a total of $44.6 million if they neglected to read their meters by April 1 and were incorrectly billed for just one week's worth of energy.

The survey found that almost a fifth (18%) of households without a smart meter had not submitted meter readings in the past three months, and 4% had not submitted them in a year. Our advice is to submit your meter readings monthly.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
