The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said a COVID-19 outbreak in a sleep camp in Georgia this June could impact school reopening.
The camp performed some, but not all, of the CDC mitigation steps for the new coronavirus epidemic, but was insufficient to protect campers and staff from disease.
In a statement, the CDC said, “A multi-day, overnight summer camp-like setting poses unique challenges in preventing the spread of infectious diseases, given the time spent by campers and staff nearby.” Said.
“The CDC’s recently announced guidance for reopening American schools recommends the consistent and proper use of cloth masks, rigorous cleaning and disinfection, social distance, and frequent hand-washing strategies in environments where children are involved. It’s important to prevent virus infections and is the best tool to prevent COVID-19.”
According to the surveyWas published Friday in the Weekly Morbidity and Mortality Report for CDC, and the camp adopted most of the components outlined in the CDC document “Proposals for Youth and Summer Camps”, while Campers used a face mask made of cloth. I didn’t wear, but only the staff.
The camp did not open windows or doors to increase ventilation in the building.
In addition, camp participants were engaged in “every day singing and cheering”, which may have contributed to the infection.
The survey breaks down what happened at the camp when it opened in mid-June into over 600 campers and over 120 staff.
Five days after the start of the orientation and two days after the start of the camp session, a teenage staff member became ill and left the camp. The day after the person was confirmed to have COVID-19. On that day, authorities began sending campers home, and closed the camp three days later.
The Georgia Department of Health was notified and started an investigation the day after the first teenage staff became ill. Overall, test results for 344 (58%) of the 597 participants from Georgia were available. Of these, 260 (76%) were positive. At least 44%-597 of 260- were infected, but researchers say that the infection rate could be higher because not everyone was tested. The 27 out-of-state attendees were not counted in this preliminary analysis.
Asymptomatic infections are common and may have contributed to the spread, the study authors said. Of the 136 cases for which symptom information was available, 36 patients (26%) reported no symptoms. Of the 100 who reported symptoms, the most commonly reported were subjective or documented fever, headache, and sore throat.
Interestingly, the youngest children had a positive rate of 51% at ages 6-10, 44% at ages 11-17, and 33% at ages 18-21.
“This study adds to the body of evidence that children of all ages are vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2 infection and, unlike earlier reports, may play a significant role in the infection. The study authors write.
They also found that the attack rate increased as they spent more time in the camp, with staff members having the highest attack rate of 56%.
“These findings show that despite the efforts of camp officials to spread SARS-CoV-2 efficiently in a youth-centered night setting and to implement the most recommended strategies to prevent infection, It has shown to bring a high attack rate among people of all age groups.”
No camp was named in the CDC survey.
CNN Reported at overnight camp A location in northern Georgia was closed earlier this month due to a positive Covid-19 test, and I was contacted again to ask if it was a camp under investigation.
