UK wants NATO defense target raised to 2.5% – POLITICO

But former US president and current candidate Donald Trump has suggested he would not protect countries that fail to meet their goals if they are attacked, sparking a fierce debate in Europe over defense spending.

Shapps argued that it would make “real difference” if other NATO members achieved the new targets proposed by Britain.

“I will insist on that and I know the Prime Minister feels strongly about that as we attend the NATO 75th Anniversary Summit in Washington DC,” the British defense secretary said.

Shapps' comments come a day after British Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced his country would spend an extra $75 billion on defense over the next six years and said he wanted Britain's defense industry to be in a “war mode”. Britain said it would increase its defense budget to 2.5% of GDP by the end of 2010.

Shapps said on Wednesday during his boss Sunak's visit to Germany that there was no need for a further increase in defense spending as some Tory backbenchers were already pushing for it.

“If someone gave me 3% tomorrow I wouldn’t be able to spend that money, at least not domestically,” Shapps told Times Radio. “So I had no choice but to go around the world and buy kits from other people.”

The government has promised to finance some of the increased spending by cutting 72,000 civil servant jobs, a decision Shapps said was “very reasonable”.
