Immigration checkpoints delayed at UK airport due to power outage

International passengers arriving at British airports, including Heathrow near London, faced long queues at immigration checkpoints for hours before the British Border Force announced on Tuesday evening that a nationwide computer outage that had caused delays was over.

Heathrow Airport, the country's largest airport, said on social media at 9.15pm that Border Force is currently experiencing a nationwide issue affecting passengers crossing the border.

Just before 2am on Wednesday, Heathrow Airport announced that the problem had been resolved.

According to BBC News, the Home Office, which oversees the Border Force, said power outages at all airports had been resolved shortly after midnight.

A spokesperson for the agency said the problem began around 7:50pm on Tuesday. There was no evidence of a malicious cyberattack and border security was not breached at any point, it added.

Manchester Airport, Gatwick Airport near London, Belfast International Airport in Northern Ireland and several other airports were reported affected on Tuesday evening, but the total number of airports affected was not clear.

Officials said the problem originated at Border Force eGates, an immigration checkpoint that processes passengers arriving through the border.

Officials at Gatwick and Manchester airports said Tuesday there had been no flight delays or cancellations related to the power outage, but they were working with Border Force staff to help passengers experiencing delays at immigration.
