Today, the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and the Japanese Ministry of Defense (MOD) finalized a formal agreement for a Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI) Cooperative Development Project (GCD) under the bilateral memorandum of understanding between the United States and Japan. ) for research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) projects.

By pursuing an agreement on the development of the GPI, the United States and Japan will strengthen regional deterrence while strengthening long-standing missile defense cooperation between the two countries.

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency is leading the development of the GPI for the DoD, which will provide a hypersonic missile defense capability during the glide phase of hypersonic flight.
