US Navy ship en route to Gaza runs aground in Ashdod – Israel News

Hundreds of people from Ashdod and neighboring areas gathered on the city's beach Saturday to see a U.S. military ship stuck on the beach next to a piece of the floating pier that the United States has recently built to bring aid to Gaza. The ship, LCM 8558, is a landing craft.

The U.S. military and the IDF worked together late in the afternoon to try to find a solution to the stranded ship problem. A front loader extracted the sand under its large propellers.

Eventually, the USAV Matamoros, a U.S. Navy ship, arrived offshore to attempt to provide relief. As the sun set, the IDF attempted to help with a drone to bring a line to Matamoros. This didn't work because the current was carrying the line too strongly and the drone wasn't powerful enough. Later, men attempted to swim the line to the waiting ship.

Meanwhile, the landing craft remained stuck on the beach. This is a rare example of the ability of the United States and Israel to work in real time to free a ship like this. This is probably the first time in history that a US military ship has run aground on a beach on the Israeli coast.

US completes construction of aid pier

The U.S. military sent ships to build a floating pier in March. They had to wait until the end of April to arrive.

The jetty was built near Ashdod and then towed off the coast of Gaza, where it became operational in early May, allowing trucks to transport pallets to the shore.

A piece of the pier floated more than 1.5 meters due to high winds and sweeps on Friday evening. This caused the landing craft to end up on the beach at Ashdod, necessitating this operation.
