Local man dies after crash on US 1

A warm but beautiful Memorial Day weekend turned tragic for a local family. A 71-year-old Vass man died after his truck crashed on U.S. Highway 1 just outside Southern Pines Saturday morning.

Emergency units were dispatched to the scene just before 9 a.m. at the intersection of Valley View Road and US 1, just north of Southern Pines.

First responders arrived and found a Dodge Ram in the median with moderate damage. The driver inside was unresponsive.

Authorities say the truck was traveling south when the driver began leaving the roadway. It traveled nearly 1,000 feet, striking a small tree before coming to rest against the inside guardrail of the southbound lane.

After being removed from the vehicle, the driver was revived and transported to Moore Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol was on scene and investigating the crash, but told the Sandhills Sentinel the crash appears to have resulted from a medical event. Further investigation is currently being carried out.

Both inside lanes, northbound and southbound, were closed while crews worked at the scene.

The Southern Pines Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff's Office and the NC Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
