Conservative Party plans to revive compulsory national service

If the Conservatives win the general election, 12 months of compulsory national service will be reintroduced.

18-year-olds can apply for one of the 30,000 regular army deployments or volunteer to carry out community service work on one weekend a month.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak said he believed reinstating compulsory service across the UK would help foster the 'national spirit' that has emerged during the pandemic.

Labor has criticized the plan, which is expected to cost around $2.5 billion, as “frustrating” and “underfunded”.

The Conservatives want the first teenagers to take part in the pilot program from September 2025, with details set to be worked out at the royal commission.

Military deployments allow young people to learn about cybersecurity, logistics, procurement, or civil response operations.

Non-military volunteering involves 25 days in organizations such as the fire service, police and the NHS.

Mr Sunak said: “South Korea is a great country, but the younger generation has not had the opportunities and experiences they deserve, and in this increasingly uncertain world, there are forces trying to divide our society.

“I will introduce a new model of national service to foster a shared sense of purpose and renewed pride in our country among our young people.”

He added that the move would help young people “learn real-world skills, do new things and contribute to their communities and country”.
