Melanoma skin cancer rates are at record high in UK

As the number of melanoma skin cancer cases continues to rise in the UK, cancer charities are warning people to do more to protect themselves from the sun.

Cancer Research UK predicts the number of diagnoses will increase from an average of 19,300 per year between 2020 and 2022 to 20,800 this year.

The analysis found that between 2009 and 2019, the external incidence rate increased by almost a third, from 21 to 28 cases per 100,000 people.

The increase in diagnoses is due in part to an aging population and increased awareness of the signs of skin cancer.

According to the report, approximately 17,000 cases of melanoma are preventable each year, with nearly 9 in 10 caused by excessive ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer that can spread to other parts of the body.

There are also non-melanoma skin cancers, which are more common and generally less serious than melanoma.

The increase in cases occurred across all age groups, but the greatest increase was seen in older people, according to Cancer Research UK (CRUK). Especially for adults over 80, the number of diagnoses has increased from 61 to 96 per 100,000 over the past decade.

The charity's analysis also showed an increase among adults aged 25 to 49.

For this group, the rate increased from 14 to 15 per 100,000 over 10 years.

Younger people are more likely to be aware of the link between UV rays and skin cancer than older generations, scientists suggest out there.

This may mean that older people are more likely to take precautions when out in the sun compared to older people who grew up with less knowledge about the risks of tanning.
