The Conservatives have pledged to open 100 new GP surgeries if they win tonight's general election.

Rishi Sunak also pledged to expand his Pharmacy First pledge, promising to modernize a further 150 existing surgeries, while also saying more treatments would be available without having to see a GP.

The expansion of the scheme will give women more contraceptive options, provide menopause support and provide treatment for more conditions such as acne and chest infections.

The Tories say this will free up 20 million GP appointments once fully implemented.

They are also committed to expanding their community diagnostic center program and say they will build 50 more in addition to the existing 160, increasing screening and diagnostic test capacity by 2.5 million more.

The Tories said they would pay for the policy by reducing the number of NHS managers to pre-pandemic levels and halving management consultancy spending across government, claiming the policy was “completely unaffordable”.

But the Conservative Party's pledge to build new GP surgeries is likely to be frowned upon after a “damning” report found the government would not be able to deliver 40 new hospitals by 2030 as promised at the 2019 general election.

The National Audit Office (NAO) concluded that only 32 of the 40 hospitals promised would be delivered by 2030, as plans were over budget and difficult to deliver (read more about the report here).
