Jon Rahm says foot infection 'a concern' ahead of US Open

PINEHURST, N.C. — Jon Rahm walked into the U.S. Open press conference room Tuesday wearing a golf shoe on his right foot, a flip-flop on his left foot and a toe separator.

The two-time major winner said the foot injury, which he described as an infection, which caused him to withdraw from the LIV golf tournament in Houston last week, was “a concern” as he prepares for the third major championship of the year.

“Could I have dragged myself out there and posted some sort of score? Yeah.” Rahm spoke about his withdrawal. “But I was getting to a point where I wasn't making the swings I wanted to make, and I could have injured other parts of my swing just from the pain. [playing] This week, I don’t know.”

Rahm said the injury or cut he suffered is between his little finger and the next toe on his left foot and he does not know how it happened or how it led to an infection . On Saturday in Houston, Rahm received a pre-round shot to numb the pain so he could continue playing.

“It was supposed to last the whole round, and by my second hole I was already sore,” Rahm said. “The infection was the most worrying part. The infection is now controlled, but there is still some swelling and pain.”

The 2022 US Open winner made a scouting trip to Pinehurst in recent weeks and said he still hopes to play in this week's tournament. That's why he uses flip-flops, Rahm said, to keep the foot dry and let it heal faster.

“I can only do what I can,” Rahm said. “The human body can only operate at a limited speed.”

After finishing in the top 10 and winning the Masters in 2023 before signing with LIV, Rahm is now ranked eighth in the world. At Augusta this year, he finished tied for 45th after missing the cut at the PGA Championship in Louisville.

Although he regularly finished in the top 10 at LIV events, Rahm's struggles in major tournaments caused him to fade from the spotlight. Rahm, for his part, said that although he had a slow start to the year, he is happy with where his career currently stands.

“I'm in a happy place. It's not like I played bad, even though a lot of you guys make it look like I'm playing bad,” Rahm said. “Yes, it hasn't been the best first half of the year, but there have been plenty of times where I haven't had a great start, but that doesn't mean you can't have a good end.”
