After the UK experienced its warmest May on record, many people across the country will have been dusting off their outdoor barbecues and refreshing their summer wardrobes in anticipation of June's heat.

However, the first 10 days of June were cooler than expected. The mercury in southern England averaged 2 degrees colder than expected this month and the outlook is unlikely to change for some time yet.

Dr Robert Thompson, a meteorologist at the University of Reading, said the biggest factor in cooler temperatures in June was the Atlantic jet stream, which pulls in cold air from Greenland and Iceland. He said the steam was writhing to steer winds blowing from various locations.
