This was partly due to Sunak calling the July 4 snap election a desire to seize reform in one fell swoop and the party lacking the structure and resources to pose a serious threat.

At first it seemed like the gamble paid off. Farage announced he would not run in the election, saying he did not have time to build a winning campaign. He said he instead preferred to focus on the US presidential campaign, for which he has been a regular cheerleader for his friend Donald Trump.

But within a week, Farage changed his mind and the course of his campaign changed. He will run for parliament as a leader in British reform. The Tory campaign was in disarray. Reforms are starting to surge in opinion polls.

I took my day off yesterday, and Farage told reporters to announce his decision at a hastily organized press conference. He had a normal day. He walked the dogs. I did some fishing. He said this guilt was because he believed his decision affected his passionate fan base, which he lost due to his decision not to run for Congress.

But there was also another kind of reasoning at work. Farage has dismissed previous comments about breaking a possible deal with the Tories and repeatedly called out their betrayal when it comes to what he sees as totem issues: delivering Brexit and lowering immigration levels.
