Will summer finally come next week?

After a bad start to the year, many Britons were hoping things would improve as summer arrived.

However, June has not yet paid off due to heavy rain and lack of sunshine across the country in the first two weeks.

Dr Robert Thompson, a meteorologist at the University of Reading, told The Independent that although June was a bit cold, the conditions were not unusual.

Although it may feel cold in the moment, June is such a variable month that the temperatures we've seen aren't that unusual, he said.

He said changes in the jet stream have resulted in milder weather and brought in weather systems from the Arctic.

But there is hope for sun seekers and those who prefer warm environments. Dr Thompson said the mercury would start to rise next week.

Starting next week, we will see temperatures return to average for this time of year, he said.

Cool winds from the Arctic, along with the jet stream, a core of strong west-to-east winds located further south than at this time of the year, have led to cooler temperatures across the UK so far in June.

But the situation will change as the rivers eventually move north, bringing higher pressures across England and Wales.

Dr Thompson also explained that while many people have felt the weather has been particularly bad recently, only three months of the past 12 months have been colder than average.

He believes temperatures overall will be above average this summer after the UK recorded its warmest May on record.

The situation is changing due to global warming, he added.

A Met Office spokesperson told The Independent that temperatures across the UK in June were three to four degrees Celsius below average. Next week will remain unsettled until warm weather returns, they said.

Sunny skies and scattered showers on Sunday and Monday. It will be locally heavy, but some areas will remain dry.

Tuesday will be mostly dry. I feel warm as the sun blows gently in the wind.
