The third major championship of the 2024 golf season has reached the final 18 holes with two Americans having already won the first two majors of the year and a third in pole position to win the next one. The USGA has loaded its main event with nearly all of the world's best golfers as 2024 U.S. Open contenders take on No. 2 Pinehurst for the first time in a decade, and it all comes to a head on Sunday.

It is the 2020 national champion Bryson DeChambeau who is in the lead with a three-shot lead after 54 holes. Second at last month's PGA Championship and having posted a T6 at the Masters to open the major season, DeChambeau is looking to capitalize on his immense play with the second major trophy of his career.

Closest to DeChambeau in the standings are Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay and Mattieu Pavon, all sitting at 4 under. McIlroy is looking to end a decade-long major drought, while Cantlay and Pavon aim to break through with their first major championships.

Scottie Scheffler entered the US Open as the favorite having already won the Masters and Players Championship this season (and he very well could have won the PGA too, if not for a series of unfortunate events). Instead of struggling at Pinehurst, he barely qualified and began reevaluating his game after 36 holes of the U.S. Open.
