US Open 2024: Ludvig Aberg has a chance to become the first player in over 100 years to do so | Golf News and Tour Information

PINEHURST, NC No one will confuse Ludvig Aberg with Francis Ouimet. Yet the potential for the two to be forever linked in golf history exists this weekend.

Aberg is making his US Open debut, and it has been impressive so far for the 24-year-old Swede. After an opening round of 66, he followed it with a 69 to take the 36-hole lead at five-under 135. Along the way, Aberg hit 22 of 26 fairways and 30 of 36 greens in regulation, leading the field in both categories.

I think it's obviously my first, and I think a US Open is supposed to be difficult. It's supposed to be tricky and it's supposed to challenge any aspect of your game. And I feel like that's really what Aberg is doing on Friday after working his way to the final duet with Bryson DeChambeau for Saturday's third round. But I'm very lucky with the way things have gone over the last few days, and I hope we can continue this momentum.

So what about the Ouimet part? Well, the last golfer to win the US Open in his first appearance was Ouimet at the Country Club in 1913. Of course, that victory was arguably one of the greatest victories in golf history, the amateur from Massachusetts defeating famous professionals Harry Vardon and Ted. Ray became the first amateur to win the Open, bringing serious attention to golf to the American public.

This is only Aberg's third major league start overall. In his first appearance at the Masters in April, he finished second behind Scottie Scheffler. It might have been a surprise if not for the fact that Aberg was already a PGA Tour and DP World Tour winner, and a member of Europe's victorious Ryder Cup team, six months after turning professional last June.

Aberg then missed the cut at the PGA Championship in May after withdrawing a week earlier from the Wells Fargo Championship due to a knee injury. It was the first sign of a slide in 2024, with Aberg having finished in the top 15 in five of his last six PGA Tour starts, including a T-5 last week at Memorial.

The advantage of working at Aberg is that while he may not be familiar with the U.S. Open, he knows Pinehurst. Aberg competed here at the 2019 US Amateur, losing in the second round of match play.

His experience there made for a funny moment during his press conference on Friday. When asked what the hardest course he had ever played was before this week at Pinehurst, here was Aberg's response:

Pinehurst because I played the US Amateur here a few years ago. I think with the way these greens are, when they get really firm, and just because there's not really any rescue zones, you just have to take the golf shots and see where they end up, and if you don't get this right, you're going to have a very tricky short game shot. I think it's a tough golf course, but again, that's the way it should be.
