But it's not just England fans – British police are also monitoring the matter in Germany.

After a few hours of drinking, rowdy crowds can quickly turn violent. A broken bottle or a crossword puzzle can spark a fight.

So PC Dickerson and his team of observers take to the streets to monitor fans and provide intelligence to the German side.

“Little things change the dynamics of a crowd. If they suddenly turn around while singing, you can see their body language change and their chests heaving,” says PC Dickerson.

The match against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen is classified as a high-risk match as there is limited information about whether Serbia supporters will attend.

Many of England's young fans, who are traveling for the first time for this tournament due to COVID-19, are also unknown in numbers.

British authorities have issued around 2,000 football bans in recent years, but some of those have expired and wardens have seen some of the previously banned people in the crowd.

“There are a number of England supporters across the country who are known to have been found guilty of football violence.

“So we asked our staff here to check the identities of those people and advised the local police that violence is likely to occur if a like-minded group approaches in Düsseldorf or Italy,” says the PC. Dickerson.

In fact, PC Dickerson and his team saw around 100 known hooligans.

They will now report back to German police to keep all of England's fights off the pitch.
