Prime Minister plans to visit Switzerland to attend major peace summit on Ukraine

The Prime Minister will visit Switzerland today to reiterate Britain's support for Ukraine as the first leaders' peace summit focuses on the country's future.

More than 50 heads of state and government are expected to attend the summit near Lucerne, which will be the world's largest gathering of leaders focused solely on Ukraine since the invasion began.

At the summit this evening, the Prime Minister will say:

Those who help Russia by providing weapons of war or components for those weapons should take note of this summit today. They should look at Bucha, Mariupol and Kharkiv and reflect on the choices they have made.

They are on the side of the invaders and on the wrong side of history. President Putin is not interested in real peace. He has launched a sustained diplomatic campaign against the summit, ordering countries to stay away and spreading false narratives about his willingness to negotiate.

We must ask why Russia feels so threatened at a summit discussing basic principles of territorial integrity, food security, and nuclear safety.

He would add:

We must stand strong and work with President Zelenskyy to put forward principles for a just and lasting peace based on international law and the United Nations Charter.

That is the way to a permanent cessation of hostilities. This will show that Ukraine is willing to stand by its side when it is ready to negotiate.

And this will show Putin's allies in North Korea, Iran and elsewhere that we will protect the right of every nation to determine its own future.

At the summit, the Prime Minister is expected to meet President Zelenskyy and reaffirm Britain's support for Ukraine, including ensuring any future peace deal is sustainable and, importantly, on Ukraine's terms.

The summit follows this week's G7 meeting in Italy, where the UK joined with its G7 partners to announce 50 new sanctions designations and specifications aimed at degrading President Putin's war machine and to send 200,000 new sanctions to Ukraine for immediate humanitarian and energy support. It pledged to provide $42 million in bilateral assistance. Stabilization is needed.

The UK also agreed with the G7 to provide Ukraine with $50 billion worth of new loans. These loans will be repaid with huge profits from the Russian central bank's frozen assets in Europe and around the world.
