TAMPA, Fla. – On June 13, the Iran-backed Houthis struck the M/V Verbena, a Ukrainian-flagged bulk carrier operated by Poland, in two separate missile attacks. Today, around 1:45 p.m. (Sanna time), the crew issued a distress call indicating that they were abandoning ship. M/V Anna Meta responded to assist. Anna Meta has collected the sailors and is transporting them to safety. The crew abandoned ship due to persistent fires and the inability to control them.

The Iranian frigate IRIN Jamaran was eight nautical miles from the M/V Verbena and did not respond to the distress call.

This continued malicious and reckless behavior by the Iran-backed Houthis threatens regional stability and endangers the lives of sailors in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. CENTCOM will continue to act with its partners to hold the Houthis accountable and degrade their military capabilities.
