The winner of the US Open will take home a record payday.

PINEHURST, N.C. A U.S. Open champion will be crowned later today at No. 2 Pinehurst, but the only question remaining is who it might be.

Bryson DeChambeau heads into the final round on seven points and leads Rory McIlroy, Matthieu Pavon and Patrick Cantlay by three, with Hideki Matsuyama and Ludvig Aberg both trailing by five.

DeChambeau already owns a US Open title, which he won at Winged Foot in 2020. McIlroy is seeking his fifth major championship and second US Open victory, although he has only not won a major tournament since the 2014 PGA Championship.

Matsuyama won the 2021 Masters, but Pavon, Cantlay and Aberg are all seeking their first major title.

Whoever wins on Sunday night will take home a record payday. The USGA announced that this US Open will offer a purse of $21.5 million, with $4.3 million going to the winner of the largest first-place check ever awarded at a major tournament. The top four all earn at least $1 million, with the runner-up receiving $2.322 million.

Xander Schauffele won $3.33 million at the PGA Championship last month and Scottie Scheffler won $3.6 million at the Masters in April.
