The Met said it had “immediately” referred the matter to its standards bureau and the officer involved had also been “removed from operational duties”. The Independent Office for Police Conduct has also been notified.

The officer was arrested Monday on suspicion of official misconduct, police said in a statement. “He was remanded in custody and bailed pending further enquiries.”

He added: “The Gambling Commission continues to lead investigations into allegations of gambling and our investigations are ongoing in parallel.”

“We are investigating possible crime related to Election Day,” a Gambling Commission spokesperson said in a statement.

“This is an ongoing investigation and the committee is unable to provide any further details at this time.”

It comes after Sunak's close associate, parliamentary aide Craig Williams, was separately investigated for gambling just days before Sunak revealed the surprise date for Britain's July 4 election.
