American family sues NASA for $80,000 in damages after space debris hits their home | Florida

A Naples, Florida, family whose home was hit by debris that fell to Earth from space and punched a hole in the roof is seeking $80,000 from NASA in compensation for damages.

The Cranfill Sumner law firm said in a news release that it filed the lawsuit on behalf of plaintiff Alejandro Otero and his family.

A metal cylinder plate from a cargo pallet that had been dropped by the International Space Station in 2021 struck the Otero family's home on March 8, 2024 while their son Daniel was at home. No one was hurt, although it created a hole in the roof and floor.

Otero told Wink News the object nearly hit his son, who was two rooms away.

The US space agency later confirmed that the debris came from its flight support equipment. Some of the debris remained intact rather than disintegrating after entering Earth's atmosphere before falling back to the surface.

NASA made the decision after debris was collected from the house and analyzed at the Kennedy Space Center. The metal cylinder weighed 1.6 pounds and measured approximately 4 inches by 1.6 inches.

Oteros' claim against NASA cites damages for uninsured property, business interruption, emotional and mental anguish and cost of assistance from third-party agencies.

They are grateful that no one was physically injured in this incident, but a near-miss situation like this could have been catastrophic. If the debris had struck a few meters in another direction, there could have been serious injuries or even death.

Worthy noted that the case seeks to set a precedent for space debris claims in both the private and public sectors.

NASA will have six months to respond to this claim.
