Sha'Carri Richardson wins 100-meter final, earns spot on US Olympic team

Two steps before reaching the finish line, Sha'Carri Richardson began banging her chest.

She knew she had won. Anyone who doesn't see her as the sprinter to beat at the Paris Olympics should probably think twice.

Richardson marked the final stop on her “I'm Not Back, I'm Better” tour with a 10.71-second sprint in the 100 meters at the U.S. Track Trials on Saturday, making her the fastest woman in the world in 2024 and officially. earned her a trip to France where the women will begin racing on August 2.

Richardson, who for the third time in the competition did not start well and had to catch up, also finished well for the third race in a row.

She was 0.09 seconds ahead of training partner Melissa Jefferson, the 2022 U.S. champion. Another sprinter from coach Dennis Mitchell's camp, Twanisha Terry, finished third and also earned a spot in the women's 100 meters team.

It’s been quite an adventure for the 24-year-old Texan. Three years ago, she also won this race (in 10.86 seconds), but her victory was taken away from her due to a positive marijuana test that laid bare everything from her own struggles with depression up to the anti-doping rules which had not changed over time.

Richardson presented herself as a new person, better and more in tune than the one who lit up this same Hayward Field in 2021 — her orange hair flowing, looking like the star of the sport.

But she stayed home for the Tokyo Olympics and started working on herself, on and off the track. It took almost two years, but she won the national championship in 2023 and said “I'm not back, I'm better”, then confirmed that a month later with the world title.

It's a risky deal to give her the gold medal in Paris given the competition she will face. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shericka Jackson and two-time defending champion Elaine Thompson-Herah have Olympic medals and are all expected to compete in next weekend's Jamaican trials.

A recent injury to Thompson-Herah confounded the math and Fraser-Pryce was a rarely seen commodity in 2024.

That leaves Richardson as the early favorite, and given that she improved on a season's best time despite a poor start, chest hits and stopping before the end of the race, it's hard to argue with that.

Earlier Saturday, reigning world champion Noah Lyles ran his 100m preliminary in 9.92 seconds, the fastest time in the first round of men's qualifying.

Lyles, like Richardson, suffered from depression around the time of the COVID-fueled Tokyo Olympics. He made it to the Games, but won a bronze medal in the 200.
