USA Track and Field Trials 2024: Noah Lyles wins men's 100m final to secure Paris Olympics berth

The men's 100 meter finals concluded Sunday evening at the United States Olympic Track and Field Trials, with Noah Lyles, Kenny Bednarek and Fred Kerley all punching their tickets to Paris. Lyles emerged victorious in a personal best time of 9.83 seconds. Bednarek and Kerley came in second and third, with times of 9.87 and 9.88, respectively.

“[Winning was] part of the plan. Nothing's changed,” Lyles told NBC Sports after the race. “It might be a shock to everyone, but when you know the goal, you know the goal.

“Three years ago I was second to last. This year I came and won,” he continued. “If I hadn't gotten that third place in Tokyo, I wouldn't have had that desire, I wouldn't have had that burning fire. I wouldn't have accomplished what I accomplished in the past, and now we are constantly looking to the future with open eyes, because anything can happen.”

Reigning world champion Lyles had already clinched a place in the trial finals with a wind-powered time of 9.80 seconds, while Bednarek, a 200m silver medalist at the Tokyo Games, finished second. 2022 world champion Courtney Lindsey and Kerley qualified for the final in the other heat with wind-aided times of 9.88 and 9.89, respectively.

Bednarek said: “I stayed calm and collected. I knew what I had in me and I just executed the race, it was plain and simple. That's all I had to do. I I'm happy to be part of the team. I was beaten during the Tokyo tests by this man right here. [Fred Kerley]. But I'm finally able to master the 100, and there are no limits for me.”

Team USA's new group of men's 100m sprinters will look to build on a strong performance from the Olympians who raced in Tokyo. Kerley took silver in the men's 100m final, clocking 9.84, while Ronnie Baker ran a personal best of 9.83 in the semi-final and eventually finished fifth in the final with a time of 9.95. The team fared better in the 200m final, with Lyles taking bronze and Knighton finishing fourth alongside Bednarek's silver. It's been two decades since a member of the U.S. team won gold in the men's 100m at the Olympics, with Justin Gatlin being the last to do so at the 2004 Athens Games.

The opening ceremony of the Paris Games will take place on Friday July 26 and the men's 100m races are scheduled to begin on Saturday August 3.
