I am an American mother living in the UK. When my kids visited the US they were shocked at how much 'food' there was and all the drinks were mostly ice.

I am a 35-year-old American mother living in the UK.

I took my three children to the United States for the first time in eight years, and many things surprised them.

They thought cars and meals were important, and drinks always had too much ice.

It has been almost eight years since our three Welsh children visited our family in the United States. We would have liked to have taken the eight-hour plane ride with them more often, but logistics, the pandemic, and cost kept us away.

For months we had been preparing for our month-long trip, and the kids were becoming more and more excited about the food and fun they could enjoy with their grandparents in a foreign land. Even if you think the two countries are very similar because they both speak English, there are many differences.

I know that healthcare, education, salaries, and culture vary widely from an adult perspective, but I was excited to see what differences they would notice as children.

Bigger cars and wider roads

After landing in Washington DC and collecting our bags, we pulled into the parking lot. The older two kids quickly figured out that the cars were different from the British ones. There were Chevrolets, GMCs, Lincolns, and endless pickup trucks.

They were also much larger. In the UK, it costs twice as much to fill up your car with petrol, the roads are much narrower and windier and there are fewer parking spaces, so smaller cars are often preferred.

My children immediately noticed that America's roads were much bigger than the UK with cars.

In DC, they tried to figure out how overpasses work and how roads overlap each other in complex shapes. In the UK, the equivalent of motorways meet at roundabouts.

They expected it, but found it funny that Americans were driving on the wrong side of the road.

They were amazed by AC

The UK rarely gets very hot. There are up to four to six weeks a year when temperatures rise above 80 degrees Fahrenheit. When that happens, we open all the windows, wear only a few summer clothes, and keep the curtains closed. This is because very few homes have air conditioning. The week is boiling hot, but we grit our teeth and endure it because it won't last long.

When we got to the hotel the night we landed, they asked us what the metal box device in the corner of our room was that was making noises. It was an air conditioning unit that pushed cold air through vents.

Since we have been here they have enjoyed the ability to cool off indoors after playing in the heat.

They think the portions are too much and there is always too much ice in their drinks.

We went out to eat, and when my parents bought the kids drinks at home, they put plenty of ice in each glass of water, juice, or soda.

Kids either love it or hate it. They love sucking on ice as a novelty, but they have been complaining that the ice-cold temperature of the drink makes their teeth hurt.

Restaurants in the UK may have a few cubes of ice, but I've never been served a drink with ice in someone's home.

They also feel that the portions are too big. My first meal in America was at Bob Evans. The kids each ordered a kids meal with a piece of pancake. Food was served to us over several trips.

“Look how many pancakes there are,” said one of the children as a plate of four large pancakes with syrup and jam was placed in front of us.

At the gas station, they were amazed at the size of bags of chips, chocolate bars and drink cups. “All the food is big.” One of them looked at the food shelf and whispered to me.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
