Gambling scandal: Sunnack refuses to say whether he told his closest aides about election date in advance

Rishi Sunak has refused to reveal whether he told one of his closest parliamentary aides about the election date before betting on it.

Craig Williams, who is currently suspended as the Conservative candidate for Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr, admitted he “made a serious error of judgment” but “it was not a crime” and declared he would continue fighting to win his seat.

The Prime Minister told the broadcaster he was “outraged” when he first learned of the allegations, adding: “If anyone breaks the rules, whether it's the Gambling Commission or the police, they should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

Mr Sunak was repeatedly asked whether he had told his parliamentary private secretary, Mr Williams, of the date in advance, but he denied doing so.

“It is absolutely wrong not to compromise in any way or form when an independent investigation is underway,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of all broadcasters, Sky's Sam Coates pointed out to Mr Sunak that he could not be biased in the investigation – only the jury could be biased.

But Mr Sunak refused to reveal if he had told Mr Williams before the election date was made public.

“As you said, there is an independent investigation underway, including by the police, but it is important that these matters are handled appropriately.”
