Man dies from outbreak linked to salad leaves

The UK Health Security Agency said one person has died in the UK in connection with the ongoing E. coli outbreak.

The man died in May and had underlying health conditions, authorities said.

Another person in the UK, who also had an underlying health condition, died within 28 days of being infected with the current variant, but the UKHSA said information suggested that “only one of these deaths was likely to have been linked to STEC infection”.

The E. coli outbreak is thought to have been caused by some supermarket sandwiches containing salad leaves.

All cases reported so far had symptoms before June 4, and the number of reported cases is now declining, offering hope that the outbreak may be over.

Some food manufacturers have removed some products from their shelves as a precaution.

The Food Standards Agency said tests showed it was likely lettuce.

FSA incident officer Darren Whitby said: “Earlier this month we confirmed that several sandwich manufacturers had taken precautionary action to withdraw and recall a range of sandwiches, wraps, subs and rolls after we were able to narrow down the infectious link through the food chain. The likely source of the outbreak was a combination of a variety of foods and the lettuce used in sandwich products.”

He said he was continuing to monitor this so steps could be taken to prevent a recurrence.

He said: “This remains a complex investigation and we continue to work with the businesses and local authorities involved to ensure the necessary steps are being taken to protect consumers.”

As of June 25, 275 cases of E. coli (STEC) O145 have been recorded across the UK.

Experts say that although the rate is slowing, the overall number of people affected could still rise because some samples from patients have not yet been tested.

Data from 249 cases showed that only half required hospital treatment.

The strain in this outbreak, Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O145, can attack the intestinal lining.

There is no specific treatment for E. coli infection.
