E. coli: Man dies in outbreak linked to salad leaves

One person has died in connection with the ongoing E. coli outbreak in the UK, according to the Health and Safety Executive.

The agency said the person died in May and had underlying health conditions.

Another person in the UK, who also had underlying health conditions, died within 28 days of being infected with the current variant, but the UKHSA said information showed “only one of these deaths is likely to be related to STEC infection”.

The E. coli outbreak is believed to have been triggered by some supermarket sandwiches containing salad leaves.

All cases reported so far had symptoms appear before June 4, and the number of reported cases is now decreasing, raising hope that the outbreak may be over.

Some food manufacturers have pulled some products from shelves as a precaution.

The agency said lettuce was the likely culprit, based on test results.

Darren Whitby, the FSA's incident officer, said: “Earlier this month we contacted a range of sandwiches and wraps after several sandwich manufacturers identified an epidemiological link to the food chain, confirming that a type of lettuce used in sandwich products was likely the cause of the outbreak. , confirming that precautions have been taken to retrieve and withdraw serves and rolls,” he said.

He said work was ongoing to identify and take steps to prevent a recurrence.

“This remains a complex investigation and we continue to work with relevant businesses and local authorities to ensure the necessary steps are taken to protect consumers,” he said.

As of June 25, 275 cases of E. coli (STEC) O145 have been recorded across the UK.

So far, 182 cases have been recorded in England, 58 in Scotland, 31 in Wales and four in Northern Ireland. The latter case is thought to have been infected in the UK.

At least 122 people have been hospitalized for treatment since the outbreak.

Experts say infection rates are decreasing, although the overall number of people affected may rise because some patient samples have not yet been tested.
