A top-secret submarine prototype was identified in Google Maps images by sharp-eyed users who spotted its futuristic design and quickly spread the word, the New York Post reported.

Photos showing the autonomous ship “Manta Ray” apparently docked at Naval Base Port Hueneme in California went viral on Sunday as military and aviation enthusiasts gaped at the rare glimpses.

The submarine is named after the sea creature because of its physical similarity and ability to hide for long periods of time in the depths underwater.

Designed by Northrop Grumman, the ship is part of a broader U.S. Navy project to increase the nation's long-range underwater fleet of unmanned vehicles.

The Manta Ray was tested off the coast of Southern California for several months earlier this year.

The defense giant released photos of the ship showing it sliding underwater.

Dr. Kyle Woerner, program manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, said the submarine can stay on the sea floor for extended periods without needing to refuel.

“Our successful full-scale testing of the Manta Ray validates the vehicles’ ability to progress to real-world operations after being rapidly assembled in the field from modular subsections,” he said in a statement.

Woerner also touted the Manta Ray's ease of assembly in limited spaces.

“Shipping the vehicle directly to its intended area of ​​use saves energy that the vehicle would otherwise expend during transport,” he said.
