One person dies due to E. coli outbreak in UK | uk news

One death in the UK has been linked to an ongoing E. coli outbreak, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

The source has been confirmed to be lettuce, and it appeared last week.

In the UK, two people have died within 28 days of being infected with the current variant, but information from clinicians says “one of these deaths is likely to be related to STEC.” [Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli] UKHSA said he was “infected”.

Both suffered from underlying conditions and died in May.

At least 122 people have been hospitalized for treatment since the outbreak began.

The current total cases are: 182 in the UK; 58 in Scotland; 31 in Wales; And there were four people in Northern Ireland, where “evidence suggests” these four people “were infected in the United Kingdom,” the health official added.

As of June 25, 19 additional cases have been reported over the past seven days.

This brings the number of confirmed infections across the UK to 275.

All currently registered cases showed symptoms before June 4.

Several food manufacturers have recalled sandwiches, wraps and salads sold at major retail chains over concerns they may be linked to the outbreak.

Positive signs despite tragic E. coli deaths

It is tragic, but perhaps not surprising, that there have been deaths linked to an E. coli outbreak of this scale across the UK.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is the most dangerous of the common diarrheal infections in the UK.

It causes particularly severe gastrointestinal problems in most people and leads to death in about 0.5% of cases, mostly in people over 65 years of age or very young children.

The specific strain implicated in this outbreak, E. coli O145 t5:206, is particularly virulent.

According to the UKHSA, this is linked to more serious illness and an increased risk of a condition called haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure and death.

The person who died in this outbreak was an adult and did not have HUS.

However, the UKHSA said they had underlying health conditions that may have increased their susceptibility to STEC.

While the outbreak cannot be declared “over” until the exact source of the salad leaf contamination is identified, the fact that there have been no new cases of E. coli 0145 since June 24 suggests that things are heading in the right direction.

E. coli is a diverse group of generally harmless bacteria that live in the intestines of humans and animals.

However, some strains produce toxins that can cause serious disease, such as STEC.

The UKHSA said the number of reported infections was falling but expected more infections to occur.

That's because the NHS is still commissioning samples and “whole genome sequencing” is underway.

Symptoms include “severe, sometimes bloody, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever,” said Amy Douglas, UKHSA's incident officer.

Simple steps to prevent infection include washing your hands with soap and warm water and using disinfectants to clean surfaces, she added.

People who are unwell should not prepare food for others and should avoid visiting people in hospitals or nursing homes.

Additionally, you are advised not to return to work, school, or childcare until 48 hours after your symptoms have resolved.

Darren Whitby, the Food Standards Agency's case officer, said the investigation was “still complex”.

He said: “We continue to work with relevant businesses and local authorities to ensure that necessary steps are taken to protect consumers.

“We are confident the possible source of the outbreak is related to lettuce, but work continues to confirm this and work with growers, suppliers and manufacturers to determine the root cause of the outbreak and take action to prevent a recurrence.”
