Biden falls flat against Trump in first US presidential debate of 2024 | US Election 2024 News

President Joe Biden and Donald Trump faced off in the first debate of the 2024 US presidential race, seeking to gain an edge in a contest that has so far been deadlocked.

But despite delivering the opening salvo at Thursday's event, Biden struggled to articulate his views at several points, appearing to struggle for words.

Meanwhile, Trump used the opportunity to shift the conversation on several points toward Biden's perceived weaknesses, stoking fears about immigration and the state of the economy.

He also tried to dodge questions about whether he would honor the results of the November 5 presidential election, saying he would only do so if it was fair and free, then reiterating false claims that the 2020 elections were rigged.

The fraud and everything else was ridiculous, he said at one point, casting doubt on President Biden's 2020 victory.

Trump currently faces two criminal charges, one in Georgia and the other in Washington, D.C., for his alleged attempts to overturn the election results.

Rusty on stage?

Thursday night's performance took place at CNN's studios in Atlanta, Georgia, and marked the first time since October 2020 that the two candidates have met on the debate stage.

Many political observers wondered whether they would be rusty, with neither having participated in any public debate in the years since.

Biden had spent the week before the debate at Camp David in Maryland, a presidential retreat where his aides helped him prepare with simulations. Meanwhile, Trump has largely continued his schedule of rallies.

But from the moment Biden took the stage, the Democratic president appeared to waver, mumbling as he approached the podium.

Yet as he faced the first question of the evening, Biden came out swinging, seeking to undermine Trump's popularity by attacking Republican leaders during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We had an economy in freefall,” Biden told the room, which was largely empty except for two CNN moderators, Dana Bash and Jake Tapper. By the time he left, things were chaotic. Things were chaotic. So we got things back in order.

He also mocked Trump's resistance to COVID-19 protective measures, saying his philosophy echoed misinformation circulating online about cures: Just squirt some bleach into your arm and you'll be fine.

But when Trump had the chance to respond, his opening remarks reflected the trademark hyperbole for which the Republican nominee has become famous.

We had the best economy in the history of our country. We have never been so successful. Everyone was impressed. Other countries were copying us, Trump said in his opening speech, before joking: “Everything was fine. »

A critical evening in a tight race

The evening was a pivotal event for Trump and Biden, who sought to advance differing visions of the United States. Trump suggested the country was declining under Biden's leadership. Biden, meanwhile, has sought to defend the United States' position in the world.

I've never heard a president speak like that before. Were the envy of the world. Name me one big country that wouldn't trade places with the United States of America, Biden said at one point.

Nobody thinks we're weak. Nobody wants to mess with us. Nobody.

Trump, however, fired back at one point: Joe, our country is being destroyed while you and I sit here and waste a lot of time in this debate.

Heading into Thursday's debate, polls showed Trump and Biden in a tight race, although the Republican appeared to have the edge.

A New York Times and Siena College poll released on the eve of the event showed Trump with nearly 48% of the vote, nearly four points ahead of Biden, who was around 44%. .

Political observers noted that Thursday's performance could deepen that divide.

“I've spoken with Republicans and Democrats since the debate ended,” said Al Jazeera correspondent Alan Fisher. “And the general opinion is that it was a very good night for Donald Trump. »

A lot of that has to do with stage presence, Fisher continued. He noted that Trump has repeated many talking points from his campaign rallies.

Yes, Joe Biden called out Donald Trump for his lies, his falsehoods, his exaggerations, for things that are simply not true. But Donald Trump seemed to be in control, Fisher said. Biden didn't finish his thoughts. He seemed confused about some things. And it was a bad night for him.

Fisher added that the debate would highlight questions about Biden's age: The Democratic president is 81, while his Republican rival is 78. This performance will do nothing to assuage those concerns.

Unusual event with familiar discussion topics

The debate was unusual for several reasons, including its historically early timing: Biden and Trump both pushed to move the first presidential debate of the election cycle to June, to avoid overlap with early voting, which begins in some states in September.

But that puts the 2024 inaugural debate even before the major party conventions, where candidates are officially named Democratic and Republican nominees.

In another break with tradition, Biden and Trump bypassed the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates to host the debates themselves, negotiating directly with CNN to host them.

However, Thursday's debate was only the first of two presidential debates scheduled this year, and political observers are hoping Biden can distance himself from his inaugural debate by the time he reaches the second, on September 10.

Trump has repeatedly criticized Biden on immigration, using fiery anti-immigration rhetoric to evoke fears of violence.

He wants open borders. He either wants our country destroyed or he wants to elect these people as voters, Trump said of Biden.

Biden has attempted to dispel the link between immigration and crime: Studies have shown that immigrants are, on average, less likely to commit crimes than U.S.-born citizens.

There are a lot of young women who have been raped by their in-laws, by their spouses, Biden responded at one point after Trump claimed that many young women had been murdered by the people he was allowing to cross the border.

Biden also tried to expose Trump’s lies about abortion access. Trump falsely claimed that Biden and other Democrats were prepared to, as they say, rip the baby out of the womb in the ninth month.

You're lying. That's simply not true, Biden countered. We are not for late-term abortion, period. Period.

Ad hominem attacks

But the debate featured several moments where each candidate traded accusations that the other was lying or complaining.

At one point, they even started comparing their golf games, with Biden challenging Trump to carry his own equipment bag and Trump mocking Biden's swing.

Biden criticized Trump for media reports that the Republican president called veterans morons and losers, citing the loss of his own son, Beau Biden.

My son was neither a loser nor an idiot. You are a loser. You are an idiot, Biden told Trump.

But even then, Trump responded forcefully, claiming that the media report was a fabrication: he made up idiots and losers, so he should apologize to me right now.

When Biden tried to press Trump about his lukewarm response to the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which saw white supremacists march through the streets with tiki torches, Trump also tried to deflect attention.

“We have been living in hell for three and a half years,” Trump responded. “It’s a hundred times Charlottesville, a thousand times Charlottesville. »

Democrats mobilize around the president

But despite criticism of Biden's debate night performance, Democrats rallied behind the president in the hours after the event, repeating accusations that Trump poses an existential threat to American democracy.

We don't turn our backs because of a performance. What kind of party does this? California Gov. Gavin Newsom asked when asked if Biden should resign. This president kept his promises. We must keep our promises to him at this time.

Vice President Kamala Harris, Biden's running mate, acknowledged the weaknesses but said the president ultimately turned in a good performance.

Yes, the beginning was slow, but the ending was strong, she said in an interview on CNN.

However, Al Jazeera correspondent Fisher reported that there were rumors of a search for a replacement candidate if Biden was no longer seen as having a viable path to victory.

If Joe Biden has one thing going for him, it's that there are five months left until the election. So they have time to fix this problem. But how they do it is the problem, he said, adding: It's upended the whole race.
