Noah Lyles had already clinched his place in Paris in the 100m final, but the reigning 200m world champion had already announced his intention to compete for four gold medals at these Olympics. Looking to secure his place in the Paris 200m, Lyles clocked 20.10 seconds in his heat. Lyles is also the reigning Olympic bronze medalist in the 200m.

“Everything seems to be going well so far,” Lyles said after his landslide victory.

Courtney Lindsey, Kenny Bednarek and Erriyon Knighton also won their heats and will compete in the semifinals. Bednarek is also on his way to Paris thanks to his second-place finish in the men's 100m final.

Christian Coleman, who was widely expected for an Olympic berth in the 100m but finished fourth in the final, is in contention for a 200m qualifier. He finished second in his heat with a time of 20.30 seconds.
