As the dramatic campaign draws to a close, are we actually grappling with Britain's enormous problems?

Before the campaign began, there was a common expectation in Westminster that a campaign starring Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer would not be much of a thriller.

In fact, from Sunnack's D-day disaster, Parag's stormy stance on the campaign, Gamblegate, and Rishi Sunnack's last-minute remarks, even though he may have been more personal than ever before, the campaign was never boring. I didn't.

But I can't help but wonder if it's a campaign that sees our politicians grappling with the enormous problems that affect us.

In the first half of the year, politicians liked to talk about the dangers facing the world, but they did not focus on foreign affairs. The challenges and opportunities of technology that they often like to talk about were also somewhat absent. How can we take care of the vulnerable and elderly through social care?

What about the crises that seem to be happening behind the closed doors of our prisons? Climate change? The true size of our national debt and what it could actually mean in the coming years?

Of course, politicians campaign to what's at the top of the voter list.

Maybe something like this: Campaign on a few key issues that will appeal to interested groups, and worry about the larger issues of governance later.

It's almost over. Our party has been working hard for over a month to get your support. The magic moment when all of us, not just politicians, take responsibility is almost here.

None of the 2024 campaigns are likely to go down as the most inspiring, dynamic and memorable political maneuvers. After all the stress and tension of the past few years, I'm sure the public wasn't in the mood for romance and fascination with any of it.

But that doesn't make our decisions any less important next week. Choices will affect us all.
