Biden courts US donors amid concerns over presidential debate performance | 2024 US election news

Democratic donors have expressed concern, with some discussing the possibility of replacing the president as nominee.

US President Joe Biden is trying to reassure donors after his performance in the first presidential debate with presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump rattled Democrats and raised serious doubts about his re-election prospects.

The president has attended fundraisers to acknowledge his concerns but also to promise that he will not abandon his campaign to lead the White House for the next four years.

“I didn't have a good night, but I'm going to fight harder,” Biden told attendees at a fundraiser at the home of New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy on Saturday.

Donald Trump poses a real threat to the nation, he said, adding that the former president would prove to be a threat to democracy and the American economy if re-elected.

Biden and his wife, Jill, previously attended a campaign event in New York's affluent East Hampton neighborhood to raise more funding.

According to public records, the event, which was closed to the media, took place at the home of Avram Glazer, owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football team.

The couple then went to a second event in East Hampton, at the home of investor Barry Rosenstein, whose wife, Lizanne, praised the president and defended his four-year record over that of Trump.

Biden focused on focusing attention on Trump, heavily criticizing his presidential record and saying his performance was also poor in Thursday night's debate.

The Biden campaign said it raised more than $27 million Thursday and Friday, including $3 million at a New York fundraiser focused on the LGBTQ community.

Democratic donors have expressed deep concerns about the effectiveness of Biden's re-election campaign after the debate performance, and are also considering potential replacements.

The list of possible replacements so far includes Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Vice President Kamala Harris, all of whom have endorsed Biden.

But so far there has been no formal pressure for the president to step down, and such pressure is unlikely to materialize due to the high logistical and reputational costs of replacing the presumptive nominee, just four months before the election.

I may not walk as easily or talk as easily as before. I may not debate as well as I used to, Biden said at a campaign event Friday. But what I do know is to tell the truth.
