With a hat on his head, a cold beer nearby, and a sun lounger leaning back, my husband ponders which paperback to flip through next. He's in full vacation mode.

But the level of work and thought that goes into actually getting to the destination with everything everyone needs is enormous, so I take it on alone.

I'll leave it to my husband and search for a travel agency for departure tomorrow! Put up a poster or spend those two precious weeks at home. So I take it upon myself to organize my destination. We research what we can afford, see what's popular with all of us, and scour long-distance weather forecasts.

Booking a trip is a daunting task in itself. That’s before you ask for ice cream, need a travel adapter, or argue about bedroom layouts. If my husband had noticed and acknowledged this, he wouldn't have been so offended. All that matters to him is packing his toiletry bag (I guess he knows he's doing me a favor) and picking up a new book at the airport. While making my selection, I hold my passport and look anxiously at the departure board to get my gate number.

He laughs at the load we are towing. Do we really need that? And I get mad inside because I know he has no idea how much space swim vests, sunscreen, and beach towels take up. Never mind the snacks the kids love, extra clothes, and pool air pumps.

My motto is 'It'll all be worth it', but it's impossible to relax immediately after collapsing on a sun lounger. Maybe I'll watch the sunscreen being applied, make sure everyone has a good time, and find the missing hat, and then I can relay my husband's words from the back of the novel, 'Just relax and go on vacation!'
