Gymnast Shilese Jones withdraws from U.S. Olympic trials due to leg injury

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Gymnast Shilese Jones has withdrawn from the U.S. Olympic trials, a day after injuring her left knee while practicing vault.

USA Gymnastics said Jones was removed from competition after being evaluated Saturday.

The 21-year-old was among the leading contenders to join Simone Biles in the five-woman team who will travel to Paris as hot favorites to win gold.

A clumsy landing on the jump changed everything.

Jones was warming up for the event before Friday night's competition when his left leg buckled awkwardly as his feet hit the mat. She was helped off the podium, but then returned to the uneven bars, her best event.

The Seattle-area native earned a score of 14.675, the best score of the evening, but she gingerly made her way off the podium and did not compete on the balance beam or floor exercise.

Jones is one of three female athletes who saw their hopes of reaching the Olympics dashed by injuries this week. Skye Blakely, who finished second to Biles at the U.S. Championships last month, tore the Achilles tendon in her right leg during training Wednesday.

Kayla DiCello, a 2020 Olympic alternate, ruptured her left Achilles tendon while vaulting Friday.
