Reform candidate resigns, backs Conservatives – Nigel Farage says some BNP supporters are 'pulling' to his party | Politics News

A Reform UK candidate has abandoned the party amid controversy over racism and is supporting the Conservative Party.

Liam Booth-Isherwood, standing for Erewash, announced he was dropping out of the race and would instead support Tory rival Maggie Throup to “stop Labour”.

He said he was “increasingly disillusioned” with the party's actions and accused leader Nigel Farage of not taking them seriously.

This follows the controversy over a member of the Reform and Openness Committee who was caught using racial slurs against the Prime Minister during an undercover investigation.

Reform UK has also had to reject several election candidates due to racist comments.

“Today I announced my decision to leave the Reform Party and immediately cease campaigning for Erewash’s Reform candidacy,” Booth-Isherwood said in a statement.

“Over the past few weeks I have become increasingly disillusioned with Reform's actions and conduct.

“I campaigned alongside many decent, honest and hard-working people during the general election campaign in Erewash, but reports of widespread racism and sexism in the reform movement have shown me that there are serious moral problems within certain elements of the party. And the failure of the party leadership to not only take this issue seriously but to fundamentally address it has made it clear to me that this is no longer a party I want to be associated with.

“As a result, I am announcing that I am recommending Conservative candidate Maggie Throup for Erewash. She is the only one who can stop Labour.”

Mr Farage has been criticized from across the political divide for failing to address accusations of racism within the reforms that have swept the party in recent days.

He insisted on Sunday that “all the bad people” were gone from the party and denied allegations that he had “encouraged” bigotry.

The controversy centers on an undercover investigation conducted by Channel 4 last week. The investigation found that reform activist Andrew Parker used the racial slur “P***” to refer to the Prime Minister, described Islam as a “disgusting cult” and said the military should “just shoot” migrants crossing the Channel. This is what was said.

Another campaigner described the Pride flag as “degenerate” and said members of the LGBT community are pedophiles.

On Sunday, Mr Farage defended his handling of the case in an interview with Sky News' Trevor Phillips on Sunday Morning. “Political parties attract all sorts of people. I've always thought politics brings out the best and worst in people and I don't fan the flames. I want unity in this country.”

Asked why people with extremist views were attracted to his party, the former UK Independence Party leader claimed it was because he had “ousted the British Nationalist Party (BNP) as an electoral force”.

“Ironically, destroying the BNP means people with such ideas will no longer have a home to go to, so some will gravitate towards us,” he added.

“If there's anyone out there who has racist views, I don't want to know,” he said.

He added: “I want to live in a country that is literally colour-blind, Trevor. I don't care what colour your skin is. I don't care what sexual orientation you have. Let's treat everyone equally. That's my agenda.”

'Bad apples disappeared through reform'

Later, Mr Farage repeated his claims to 5,000 supporters attending the “biggest rally ever” this afternoon that Mr Parker was a “paid actor” and part of a “deliberate attempt to derail our campaign” – claims C4 and Mr Parker have denied.

Regarding the election betting scandal, he added: “How many bad apples have we had? We have, but as far as I know, no one who was involved in an organized betting ring supported us.

“What I'm saying is that the bad apples are gone. We'll never have them again.”

The rally came after the Prime Minister intensified his attacks on Prime Minister Farage, saying he had “no remorse or remorse”.
