Rishi Sunak has claimed Britain is a better place to live now than it was in 2010 when the Conservatives were in power.

In one of his last major interviews before Thursday's general election, the prime minister added that while the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine had made “life difficult for everyone,” the country was now “on the right track.”

Labour said shop prices, NHS waiting lists and mortgage costs had risen under the Conservatives and it was distressing to see Rishi Sunak simply brush aside the concerns of ordinary workers.

In an interview with the BBC's Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, Mr Sunnack rejected the “declineist narrative” and defended Brexit, saying claims Britain lost its place in the world after leaving the EU were “absolutely wrong”.

Appearing on the same programme, Labour's election co-ordinator Pat McFadden said he believed relations with the EU could be improved but ruled out a return to freedom of movement as part of the deal.

He said Labour would not sign up to anything that was not in Britain's best interests.

“The point is to try. The point is whether we can do it better than what we're doing now and deal with some of the trade barriers that are affecting our business.”

Liberal Democrat deputy leader Daisy Cooper has said the current Brexit deal is “sloppy” and her party wants free movement for people under 35 to work or study in Europe.

She also argued that the number of immigrants is too high, but did not give specific figures on what that limit should be.
