Dry, cool and sunny June in the UK

June 2024 was a drier, cooler and sunnier month than the UK's long-term average, according to preliminary Met Office figures.

June was a month of contrasts for many: a cool first half of the month was offset by warmth towards the end, and rainfall was relatively scarce, especially in the south.

A drier-than-normal month

June was drier than average, with the UK receiving 29% less rainfall than the long-term weather average. It recorded 55.1mm in one month.

Wales and southern England received significantly lower rainfall than average. Wales received 48.1mm, 48% below average. Southern England received 24.8mm, 58% below average.

Northern Scotland recorded above average rainfall, with 122.0mm, 32% above the June average.

Cooler than average month

The average temperature in June was 12.9 degrees Celsius, 0.4 degrees Celsius lower than the long-term weather average.

A Met Office spokesperson said: Temperatures for the first two weeks of June were around two degrees below average as northerly winds brought cold Arctic air across the UK, signalling a cool start to the meteorological summer.

In the second half of the month, high pressure emerged as the jet stream moved north, bringing warmth to many people, especially in the south. Some parts of south-east England have exceeded 28C for several days.

But the warm weather didn't last long, with temperatures returning to below average in the last few days of the month.

Sunlight amount close to the average for many people

Although there are regional differences, the UK's sunshine hours were slightly above average, with 178.8 hours of sunshine (4% more than average).

The UK had the most hours of sunshine compared to the national average, provisionally at 210.2 hours, 12% longer than average.

On the other hand, Northern Ireland recorded 112.3. Sunshine hours are 25% below average, but not low enough to be close to records.
