American stingray dies after becoming pregnant without partner

A stingray that miraculously became pregnant earlier this year, despite not sharing her tank with a male stingray, died over the weekend.

Charlotte, a rusty-colored round stingray, died after suffering from a rare reproductive disease, according to Team ECCO's Aquarium & Shark Lab, the North Carolina aquarium where she lived.

In February, Charlotte was said to be carrying up to four babies.

Her pregnancy was likely due to parthenogenesis, a form of asexual reproduction where a female egg is fertilized without sperm from a male.

This phenomenon occurs in species such as reptiles, insects and some fish.

When it was announced that she was pregnant, some believed that she had been impregnated by one of the two “very young male sharks” that also lived in her tank.

The aquarium had originally predicted that Charlotte would give birth in late February, but she never gave birth to her offspring.

In May, the aquarium announced that she was suffering from a condition that was “negatively impacting her reproductive system.”

“These results represent a truly sad and unexpected medical development,” the aquarium said at the time.

In June, the aquarium said she was no longer pregnant but was in stable condition.

“Charlotte continues to follow her normal routine and is happy,” the aquarium said.

Following his death on Sunday, the aquarium closed on Monday.

Her pregnancy was followed by many people across the United States and was included in a Saturday Night Live sketch in March.
