US Soccer Statement After USMNT Copa America Elimination – Is This the End for Gregg Berhalter?

The USMNT was eliminated from the 2024 Copa America in the group stage as immense pressure is placed on head coach Gregg Berhalter.

A 1-0 loss to Uruguay on Monday in Kansas City caused the USMNT to lose two of its three group stage games, as it beat Bolivia 2-0 in the opener, then lost 2-1 to Panama (after Tim Weah was sent off early) and never started against Uruguay.

US Soccer Technical Director Matt Crocker released the following statement after the match:

Our performance in the tournament was not up to our expectations. We must do better. We will conduct a full evaluation of our performance in the Copa America and determine the best way to improve the team and results in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.

Will Gregg Berhalter stay in charge?

At this point, this seems highly unlikely.

The USMNT still has two years until the 2026 World Cup is played on home soil and this tournament was supposed to give this talented but still young team invaluable experience against South America's best.

That opportunity was squandered and the USMNT has been stagnant for some time.

Berhalters' team has taken advantage of Mexico's struggles to win several games against El Tri in recent years and capture several CONCACAF titles along the way, but the lack of real competition from their own region has papered over the cracks.

According to Stars and Stripes, considering Berhalter's six years in charge, the USMNT has played 24 games against teams ranked in the top 30 of FIFA's ELO rankings at the time of this game. Excluding games against Mexico (which they have won four of seven), they have won two games. A 1-0 win over Iran at the 2022 World Cup and a 1-0 friendly win over Ecuador in 2019.

There has been no progression from playing against the top teams and while the USMNT has not had the opportunity to play them as often as they would have liked due to various CONCACAF tournaments, scheduling issues during COVID and other external factors, the proof is in the pudding.

The most talented group of players the USMNT has ever had has not lived up to expectations. That's why a coaching change is needed to get the most out of these players.

It all got too comfortable and the fact that most of these star players wanted Berhalter back so badly after his contract ended and he was embroiled in controversy in early 2023 speaks volumes. They were happy with the way things were going because they weren't being pushed out of their comfort zone.

The U.S. soccer team now needs to do some major recruiting, get these players to fulfill their potential as a group, and focus on what they want from the next coach and where they're headed.

Berhalter is a coach who wanted to change the playing philosophy of the entire team and develop a group of talented youngsters. He did it but failed to take the next step. Now it's a matter of hiring a coach who only knows how to do one thing: win games against the elite.
