US gives Moderna $176 million to develop bird flu vaccine

The US government has awarded Moderna $176 million (€139 million) to develop a messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) pandemic flu vaccine that would be effective against bird flu.

She says she wants to be “better prepared” for public health crises, having learned the lessons of Covid.

Avian influenza does not pose a major threat to humans, despite outbreaks in poultry and cattle.

The $176 million, from the U.S. Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, will be used to complete the development and late-stage testing of Moderna's H5N1 avian flu vaccine.

This strain has been present in birds for years, but other animals, including cattle, have been infected in recent outbreaks.

Some believe the virus could one day evolve and begin to spread easily among humans, with potentially serious consequences.

So far there is no sign of this.

There have been a few rare cases of people catching it after coming into contact with sick animals.

In humans, the virus can cause symptoms ranging from mild illness, such as upper respiratory and eye infections, to life-threatening illness such as pneumonia, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Moderna has begun initial testing of its mRNA vaccine against avian influenza in 2023, in healthy adult volunteers.

The results, expected later this year, will inform next steps, he said.
