Israel's Gaza policy 'is a target for the Americans,' former US officials say

Twelve former Biden administration officials who resigned over policies on Israel and the Gaza war say the government's actions endangered U.S. national security.

These policies have further destabilized the region and placed America in a delicate position, they said in a joint statement.

One of 12 U.S. Interior Department officials resigned Tuesday.

The US State Department has previously denied such allegations, stressing its criticism of civilian casualties in Gaza and its efforts to increase humanitarian aid.

The joint statement by the former officials said: “The United States' diplomatic cover and continued flow of weapons to Israel have ensured our undeniable complicity in the massacres and forced starvation of a besieged Palestinian population in Gaza.”

This is not the first such statement from former officials, but it comes at the same time as the resignation of Maryam Hassanein, a special assistant at the US Interior Department. She also signed the statement.

The former officials accuse the U.S. government of clinging to a “failed policy” that has not only been devastating to the Palestinian people, but has also endangered Israelis, stifled free speech and undermined U.S. credibility in its commitment to a rules-based international order.

The joint statement said that ongoing arms transfers to Israel, despite its actions in Gaza, have further destabilized the Middle East and “put America in a target.”

“The political and economic interests of our nations throughout the region have also been significantly damaged, while U.S. credibility has been deeply shaken around the world at a time when we need it most, as the world enters a new era of strategic competition,” the statement said.

Other signatories include Josh Paul, who oversaw relations with Congress on arms transfers. He resigned in October.

A former White House official, two former members of the Air Force Department and a former Air Force officer with the Defense Intelligence Agency also signed the statement.

The State Department has been contacted for comment. It has previously said it encourages dissenting views on policy and that its staff could make them known through “appropriate channels.”

The United States has “made clear at the highest levels, publicly and privately, to Israel that it must respect international humanitarian law,” a State Department spokesperson said in April.

The spokesperson's comments came shortly after seven current and former US officials told the BBC that President Biden's pressure on Israel after a deadly attack on aid workers had not gone far enough and would fail to stem the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The Israeli military has launched a campaign to destroy the Hamas group that rules Gaza in response to an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, in which around 1,200 people were killed and 251 others taken hostage.

More than 37,900 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence.
