US expels Chinese migrants in first major exodus since 2018

The United States has sent a group of migrants back to China in the first major deportation flight since 2018, and said Tuesday it was working with Chinese authorities to arrange additional flights.

The deportation, aboard a charter flight, took place over the weekend in coordination with Chinese authorities, the Department of Homeland Security said. The department confirmed that 116 people from China were deported.

U.S. and Chinese authorities are working together on additional deportation flights, the statement said.

The announcement comes amid intense debate over immigration and border management policy ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November. Since last year, increasing numbers of Chinese migrants have crossed the U.S. southern border to escape bleak economic prospects and political oppression.

Many follow a route popularized on social media that takes them through the dangerous Darin Gap on the Panama-Colombia border, the only land route into northern South America for migrants heading to the United States. Once at the southern border, they surrender to U.S. border agents and seek asylum, citing a credible fear of being sent back to China.

On Monday, the U.S. government announced it had signed an agreement with Panama aimed at stemming the flow of migrants through the Darin Gap. The United States will provide funding and training for the new migrant deportation program, the State Department said.

Liu Pengyu, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, said in a statement that the Chinese government has conducted international law enforcement cooperation with the immigration law enforcement departments of relevant countries to repatriate those involved in smuggling activities, adding that it has returned them to their original places of residence and pursued their legal responsibility in accordance with the law.

In fiscal year 2023, more than 24,000 Chinese migrants were temporarily detained at the U.S. southern border, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, more than in the previous decade combined.

Last year, Chinese migrants became the fourth-largest group to cross the border into the United States this way, surpassed only by Venezuelans, Ecuadorians and Haitians, according to Panamanian immigration authorities.
